Can you live in an unfinished basement?

I know you “can” – but how do you think living conditions would be? Would it be dry/damp/smelly? Do they generally house a lot of different pests and bugs? Has anyone had experience in living in an unfinished basement? Also, what can you “make out of it” if you add area rugs, better lighting, fans for ventilation, and a humidifier? Would you live in one?

If it is moist, you will want a humidifier. Legally you aren’t supposed to have living space in a basement without an egress window. You can get carpet squares for the floor. They are easy to replace if they get wet and they have an attached pad.
